Battery Theatre Company – “Mary, It began with a lass…”

Interpreting the history

Battery Theatre are pleased to announce that our production this summer will be
“Mary, It began with a lass…”
by Suzanne Lofthus.

“Mary, It began with a lass…” is a fast paced journey through the life and loves of Mary, Queen of Scots, arguably Scotland’s most famous Queen and tells the story of her love for Scotland and for the men around her. It looks at the lives of Mary and Elizabeth I, two powerful women struggling to retain control of their nations and their love.
Mary was a passionate woman who had a mind and heart of her own, determined to rule but not always choosing wisely. Must a woman choose between love and power? This play by Suzanne Lofthus looks at Mary’s story through the complex power struggles around her, power struggles that remain to this day.

The play was originally performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2014 (as “Mary, the Last Farewell”) since then Suzanne has adapted and re-written some of the play to reflect the pivotal events that took place during Mary’s time in Dunbar Castle, events that ultimately led to Mary ending her life at the end of an axe…

“Mary, It began with a lass…” will be performed at The Battery Theatre in Dunbar in early July, before embarking on a Scottish tour.

Ticket details and cast and crew info will be appearing in the coming months.
